Walt Disney

December 1901 - December 1966

Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago in 1901, and spent most of his childhood in the small town of Marcelene (which a quick Internet search shows to be in Quebec). He and his brother Roy started the Disney studios, which, less than a hundred years later, had become one of the largest media companies in the world.

It was Disney's dream to build a place where families could spend the day together. Thus, Disneyland was born. He had another dream involving a giant doughnut, but nothing much developed from that.

Although Disney was a visionary in many ways, he had very little ability to think up original names for things and tended to just name everything after himself (for example WED enterprises, the Disneyland television show, and the wizard in Fantasia). Even so, Disney did not name Disneyland after himself as is commonly believed -- the park is, in fact, named for his brother Roy.

There is a persistent rumor that just before his death in 1966 Disney was cryogenically preserved -- frozen, if you will -- so that he could be resurrected at a later date when medical science had the knowledge to prolong his life. This is absolutely untrue. Disney was, in fact, freeze dried and to this day attends corporate board meetings in that form.

Disney was honored with a U.S. postage stamp and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and videos of his feature films have enriched countless Chinese video pirates.
