Disney California Adventure

Paradise Pier

February 2001

Paradise Pier is themed like an old-time boardwalk amusement area with rides and attractions right out of Coney Island. Or, as one opening-day press release put it, "The only thing here from the 21st century is the prices!"

There is a larger concentration of attractions (and apostrophes) in Paradise Pier than in any other area of California Adventure. Most of these are common "off the shelf," "out of the box," or "cheap" rides with some kind of seaside theme stapled on. These rides were, for the most part, purchased at auction from Bert Bargley's Jolly Land, a California/Nevada border amusement park closed in the early nineties for copious safety violations. They were, of course, repainted and tested to the point allowed by available funds before being installed on Paradise Pier.
